The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 20 September 2014 | |
21 September 2014 The main shinty focus was on the U21 representative match between the North and the South on Saturday 20 September 2014.
U21 Representative Match North U21 1 South U21 3 The south took the honours, beating the North 3-1 in their U21 meeting at An Aird. The sides contestedthe Caol Cup which was donated to the Camanachd Association by the late Mrs Hobbs in 1956 and had previously been played for on an annual basis between selects from Inverness-shire and Argyll-shire. Scotland U21 Manager Garry Reid was an interested spectator as Allan MacRae led the North youngsters for this 1pm throw up with Alan MacKechnie in charge of the South. Oban Camanachd’s Gary McKerracher missed out from the original South squad as he was on holiday. The South went in front on 32 minutes when referee Lachie Wood ruled that Lochaber keeper Callum MacDonald had kicked the ball inside the D. Glasgow Mid Argyll’s Craig Anderson stepped up to convert from the spot. The North pressed to get back on level terms but found Kyles Athletic’s Innes MacDonald to be on fine form in goal. However Stuart Callison equalised on 40 minutes with a powerful shot from just outside the D which flew high into the net. Just when it looked as if the first half would end all-square, Aberdour’s Angus Thorburn ran onto a low cross and took the ball into the D before slipping it past keeper Callum MacDonald to make it 2-1. Kilmallie’s Shane Gillies came on in goal for the North at the interval with Ewan Harrison from Col Glen doing like-wise for the South. The North enjoyed plenty possession in the second half but the South defence contained Lovat marksman Greg Matheson and his fellow forwards. The South sealed the win against the run of play a minute from time when Iain Wilson hit a screamer of a shot from the right of the pitch which went high into the net from 30 yards out. Scotland boss Garry Reid is expected to let the players know by the end of this week which have been selected for his squad to play in the U21 Shinty / Hurling international. Kinlochshiel’s Donald Nixon will likely miss out as he suffered a broken thumb in the game. The North and South senior players took part in a preparation match afterwards as Scotland manager Ronald Ross looks to shape his senior squad for the double-header against the Ireland senior side.
