South Skye Win Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup - UPDATED! | |
26 October 2014 South Skye won the Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup with a 3-1 victory over North Skye at the Portree High School All-Weather pitch on Saturday 25 October 2014. This was the 2015 contest of this annual clash and the match was brought forward to give the players valuable some game-time ahead of the Marine Harvest National Division play-off against Ballachulish at Blairbeg on Saturday 1 November 2014. Scotland cap Steven Morrison, Jamie Gannon, Shockie MacLennan, Gilleasbuig MacDonald and Iain MacLellan were amongst those missing for this clash but there was still a great turn-out of players. Davie Pringle and Donnie “Digg” MacDonald took charge of the North side for this 1.30pm throw up with John MacLeod and Aonghas MacDonald in charge of the South. Davie Pringle’s jacket is understood to be on a shoogly peg after the defeat! Danny Morrison fired the South into the lead but a goal from John MacKenzie a minute before the break tied the contest at half-time. The South’s forward play was good and Danny Morrison got his and the South’s second goal with Kenny Campbell adding a third to seal the 3-1 win. Both goalkeepers - Iain MacLeod for the South and the North’s Ryan Morrison - were in fine form throughout the match. The Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup was presented to South captain Iain Murray by Chrisann MacDonald at a reception at the Skye Camanachd Clubhouse afterwards. Ewen Morrison Ewen Morrison owned his own transport business and provided transport for Skye Camanachd for much of the 1970s. He provided a bus and drove the team to away matches all over Scotland. Indeed during one particularly lean financial period for the club, he refused to submit a single invoice for 3 years. Ewen belonged to Drumuie, just outside Portree where his family were crofters for many generations. Travelling with Ewen was an education and entertainment wrapped up in one. He had a fund of local history and Gaelic anecdote which he was more than happy to recount, and equally large repertoire of Gaelic songs which he liked to sing as he drove along. His son Alasdair Morrison played for Skye Camanachd during this period. Ewen passed away in August 1981, aged 71 years and he is a much missed and famous figure in Skye Camanachd’s history. The Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup is played in his honour each year. It used to involve a summer contest between Bernisdale, North End, Portree and South End but since the introduction of summer shinty, it has been a pre-season clash between North Skye and South Skye. The 2009 Ewen Morrison Cup was won by the South as they defeated the North 5-1 on Saturday 21 February 2009.
