Skye Camanachd 2 Newtonmore 1 | |
14 May 2023 The Skye Camanachd second team came from behind to beat the Newtonmore second team 2-1 in their Mowi North Division 1 match at the Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 13 May 2023. Skye manager Willie MacDonald’s absences for this noon throw up included Cameron MacKay and Alexander MacDonald. Newtonmore manager Peter Ross and his assistant Mark Taylor travelled without defender James Ross. ‘More took the lead on 28 minutes when Kyle Clark gathered the ball on the right and he sent a superb swerving shot into the roof of the net, above the keeper’s head. When Brodie MacBean fired home on 43 minutes, again from the right, it looked as if Newtonmore would take a two-goal lead into the break. However, after initially allowing the goal, referee Jamie MacPherson, following consultation with the goal judge, brought play back as Cameron McNiven was adjudged to have fouled Skye’s Taylor Matheson as he cleared the ball out of defence in the lead up to the goal. McNiven seemed to fall to an off the ball challenge just moments before the incident and, with tempers rising, the half-time whistle came at just the right time. Newtonmore introduced Drew MacDonald at the break, and they went on to create several chances including one in front of goal when Glen MacKintosh and Drew MacDonald combined to set up Brodie MacBean, but he sent the ball the wrong side of the post. Moments later, a turn and shot from Skye’s Archie MacDonald levelled the contest with 51 minutes played. A good ball from Euan Dingwall found Glen MacKintosh in a central position and he knocked the ball down to Drew MacDonald but his effort went just wide. A turn and shot from Skye substitute Shockie MacLennan went wide of the keeper’s left post following s Skye attack. Skye keeper Calum Nicolson then made a great double-save from Brodie MacBean and substitute Keith Callum. Newtonmore, who had only lost once in the league previously, were made to pay for their profligacy with 7 minutes remaining when Skye’s Taylor Matheson scored the winner following a goalmouth scramble after a corner on the right.
