18 June 2023 The Skye Camanachd first team manager lost 1-0 in their Mowi Premiership derby against Kinlochshiel at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 17 June 2023. Skye manager Kenny MacLeod planned just one change from the twelve who started the previous week’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final with Neil McVicar coming into the midfield in place of Kenny Cushnie. However, he was forced to make a second switch when James Pringle was taken unwell just moments before throw up and Cushnie was restored to the side. Ross MacKinnon and Ross Gordon swapped places with MacKinnon going to full centre. ‘Shiel boss Willie MacRae has Oliver MacRae and John MacRae on his long-term injury list but was otherwise along usual lines with David Falconer going to centre and Donald Nixon to wing centre where he put in a man of the match performance. Both teams had chances before ‘Shiel broke the deadlock on 36 minutes. Donald Nixon launched a hit-in from the right which took a bounce on the hard surface inside the D, and as Skye keeper Murphy Henderson tried to clear with his hand, the ball ended up in the net. Kinlochshiel dominated the start of the second half and Murphy Henderson saved well with his foot from Finlay MacRae but Skye looked a better prospect when William MacKinnon and John Gillies were pushed further up the park and, following a Skye corner on the right, Gillies saw his point-blank volley brilliantly saved by ‘Shiel keeper Josh Grant who kept the ball out with the inside of his right calf, turning the ball over the bar in the process. Ruaraidh MacLeod twice went close for Skye at the death, once from a goalmouth scramble and then firing just over with a blistering drive from the left but ‘Shiel did just enough to take the points.
