Sir Tommy MacPherson died peacefully at home in Newtonmore on Thursday 6 November 2014, aged 94 years. He had been the most decorated living soldier in the British Army with:
His amazing exploits are described in his best-selling autobiography, ‘Behind Enemy Lines’. The MacPherson family has had a close association with Newtonmore over many years. Sir Tommy MacPherson’s father had helped introduce scientific shinty to Newtonmore in the late 19th century and Sir Tommy maintained a keen interest in the sport throughout his life. Even in failing health, he insisted on being pushed in his wheelchair to his beloved Eilan on a Saturday; no matter the weather. Sir Tommy MacPherson was also President of London Camanachd when the club reformed in the 1980s. Newtonmore Camanachd Club was proud to have been asked to provide a shinty guard of honour at Sir Tommy MacPherson’s funeral at St Brides, Newtonmore at 11am on Friday 14 November 2014.
