26 July 2023 Scotland under-17 enjoyed mixed fortunes during their 2023 RI Cruden Ireland Tour.
Kildare U17 (4-1-10) 24 Scotland U17 (11-0-7) 40 Scotland under-17 got off to a winning start in their RI Cruden Ireland Tour with a 40-24 victory over Kildare in their 7.30pm throw-in at the Hawkfield Centre of Excellence on Monday 24 July 2023. Scotland built up a 26-6 interval lead with Oban Camanachd’s Matthew Sloss and Kinlochshiel’s Archie MacRae grabbing hat-tricks whilst Beauly’s Torrin Cairns got two goals. Matthew Sloss and Beauly’s Callum Mciver chipped in with additional points whilst Kildare scored two goals. With the rules relaxed during the second half to allow the hurlers to use their hands, Kildare came more into it, scoring two more goals, a two-pointer and ten single points over the bar from open play. Scotland added three more goals through Oban Celtic’s Innes Jackson and a brace from Bure’s Rory McDonald whilst Matthew Sloss scored two more single points, making him top scorer with twelve points. Skye’s Archie Millar grabbed two single points and Innes Jackson a point. Inverness player Iain Hunter was given the RI Cruden man of the match accolade.
Kilkenny U17 (6-0-10) 28 Scotland U17 (2-3-3) 15 Kilkenny under-17 proved more formidable opponents in their 7pm throw in at Nowlan Park on Tuesday 25 July 2023. Captains Finlay Maclennan of Scotland and Micheál Ahern of Kilkenny exchanged jerseys prior to throw-in. Kilkenny looked well-prepared for this contest, and they found the back of the net and added a point before the visiting Scots could settle. However, an Oban double from Innes Jackson and Matthew Sloss turned the tables and had the Scots 6-4 ahead. Kilkenny went back on the attack, and they added five more single points over the bar without reply to lead 11-6. The hosts were relentless as they added three more goals to increase their advantage to 20-6 whilst another two single points made it 22-6, a lead Kilkenny took into the break. Archie Millar, Newtonmore’s Euan Dingwall and Archie Millar again added Scotland points early in the second half to make it 22-9 and although another Kilkenny point interrupted the momentum, Archie Millar notched two more points and it was now 23-11. Kilkenny responded and added two single points of their own followed by a goal to increase their lead to 28-11. It was end-to-end and the scores came quickly as two points from Beauly’s Finlay Maclennan followed by two points from Archie Millar, taking his personal tally to six points, cut the deficit to 28-15 and that was the final score as the Scots could take some comfort from winning the second half.
