Gary Innes Announces Shinty Retirement | |
09 November 2014 Fort William and Scotland forward Gary Innes announced his retirement from shinty following his sides win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield on Saturday 8 November 2014. The victory secured the Marine Harvest National Division title and a return to the Orion Group Premiership next season. Speaking after the game, Innes said, “Shinty has played a huge part in my life and it wasn’t an easy decision but I feel it’s the right decision, looking ahead to next year’s musical commitments.” In a distinguished shinty career, Innes was an integral part of the Fort William side which won five Camanachd Cups in six years. His finest moment came in 2005 when he captained Fort William to a 3-2 Scottish win over Kilmallie, winning the Albert Smith medal as man of the match into the bargain. He won a second Albert Smith in 2010, scoring twice as Fort William beat Kingussie at the Bught Park. He captained Scotland in the 2009 Shinty / Hurling international against Ireland, recording a win in the away test at Croke Park. He was recalled to the international set up in 2014. |
